My understanding is that the very first / early 1954 Strats did not have serial numbers or plates on them.
They only had something marked in pencil ......... which was not always anything like a serial number

Before he owned his own Strat Buddy used to borrow Scotty Turner's 1954 Strat which was penciled "Pro 1/54" and is supposed to be
the very first Strat. This one is now owned by by Ted Turner, Scotty's brother

This raises the question of which Strat guitar Buddy was playing in some of the Buddy and Bob photos i.e. his own or Scotty's.
Does anybody know which is which in which photos ??

Buddy's first strat was stolen towards the end of 1957. He acquired it's replacement by going to Detroit and back the same day.

Strat no 2 was the one seen on the Ed Sullivan Show and also the UK Tour.
This one was stolen on 9th April 1958 (the word stolen is written on the tour itinerary which still survives).

Strat no 3 was stolen only a week later in East St Louis on 15th April !

Photos exist from 1958 showing Buddy playing a strat which still has the tremolo arm attached which Buddy always removed.
So this one must have been brand new at that point

Strat no 4 was stolen in July 1958 ....... but, see below.

Strat no 5, serial no 028228, a three tone sunburst, is the one shipped to him in July 1958 from Mannys in New York
Tommy Allsup claims this guitar replaced no 4.
Allsup claims Manny shipped TWO Strats to Buddy BEFORE the July 1958 tour so maybe there is confusion about nos 4 and 5
i.e. it was no 4 which was the stolen one.

No 5 was the one on the last tour.

Recently several 'genuine' 1954 Strats have come up for auction, recent ones being owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and another,
this one sunburst, by Graham Nash selling via Heritage Auctions, starting bid $20k..

This is all a bit confusing to be honest so if anybody can correct or update what I have written please do so.
.
