Gert, it is the same thing.

There's a long tradition in pop music of taking existing melodies and then claiming copyright.

Paul Simon stole the melody for his "American Tune" from an old hymn (Oh Sacred Head, Now Wounded) and took an Oscar Peterson melody (Hymn To Freedom) for "Bridge Over Trouble Water" then added new lyrics and made millions.

Carl Perkins took "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" from an old 1930s Rex Griffin song.

Buddy's unfinished song "That's What They Say" seems to be inspired by "Wait 'Til The Sun Shines, Nellie."

I still think it's unlikely Norman made the decision to give complete songwriting credit to King Curtis, who was hired for one day to provide some sax accompaniment. Petty was not one to leave money on the table.
