BUDDY HOLLY - THAT MAKES IT SOUND SO MUCH BETTER (NEW EDITION)

(NOTE: This is the complete package, updated in 2020/21.

Buddy Holly with The Jack Hansen Combo: THAT MAKES IT SOUND SO MUCH BETTER - CD version. Buddy Holly's 'apartment tapes' are well-known, particularly the six songs he wrote in December 1958 and recorded on his Ampex 401A tape-recorder. These were heard first in the overdubbed versions produced by Jack Hansen in 1959 and 1960. Many fans prefer Buddy's original guitar and vocal demos to the later overdubbed versions. But the Jack Hansen versions - using some of New York's finest session musicians, who were never really a Combo - are still the ones that most fans remember. There were many flaws in the overdubbing, emphasised by the fact that Buddy Holly never envisaged the tracks he made being used to create commercial releases and thus did not stick to strict tempo timing. And the equipment used to mix the original 3-track tapes was primitive compared to today's computer-based technology. Modern technological advances have enabled us to remix the tracks and errors in timing have also been corrected by producer Chris Hopkins. Chris spent many hours on each track, creating the best versions you will ever hear of the six recordings. All have been remixed into mono and stereo versions ... you will hear instruments you never heard before and the overall quality will surprise you!

The CD comes with a 36-page illustrated booklet with full details about the recordings and the re-mastering process.

We have now added new improved mixes and additional versions of the original tracks, PLUS the new version of Peggy Sue Got Married ... reuniting The Crickets with Buddy Holly for the first time since 1958.

NOTE:- COMMENTS below by Geoff Barker (BBC Rock 'n' Roll Radio Show & life long Buddy Holly fan!!)

It's Buddy's apartment tape songs that were first overdubbed by The Jack Hansen Combo. Studio genius Chris Hopkins has done another incredible job. Creating new stereo mixes, plus remixed mono originals, plus of course Buddy's un-dubbed masters, (in mono and true stereo) sounding like he is in the room with you. Also the stunning version of 'Peggy Sue Got Married' putting Buddy back with The Crickets, which was sheer genius. Buddy's acoustic guitar rings like a bell and you can hear so many parts he played that were obscured before. Also, Hansen's guitarist Donald Arnone playing some great little licks and fills, which I've never heard. Even an alternate vocal out-take of 'That's What They Say' in un-dubbed form.

I never minded the Hansen overdubs as they were the first way we ever got to hear these songs in the early 60's, but I couldn't get on with the later Petty overdubs with The Fireballs (which are NOT on here!) 26 tracks as never heard before, reminding us of how great Buddy was and giving lie to the tale that he was going 'M.O.R' and 'strings'.

None of his last recordings made just before he went off on that final tour this week in 1959, support that musical direction. Essential for all Holly fans.)
