 I have wondered the same thing. Why was Buddy going along with his and Maria's living beyond their means? Buddy had $50K in the bank (equivalent to roughly $500K in today's money), but, it was frozen by Norman Petty.
Therefore, the newlyweds were borrowing from Maria's aunt, who also resided at The Brevort. My guess is that Maria was spoiled, born with a silver spoon. She was probably living with her Aunt before the marriage. Also, with Aunt Provi being the Executive Assistant to Buddy's music publisher, she would have known that with Petty out of the way, Buddy was going to be a Millionaire. That's probably why she told Maria to accept his crazy, spontaneous proposal.
