I give props to Mulligan for answering this question very well earlier in this thread.

There are several bloggers and contributors to websites
that have gone to the trouble of researching micro film files
of New York rents circa 1958, including the Brevoort and similar buildings.

All indications are that if Buddy was actually paying 1000.00 per month, he was being cheated. Could he have been paying a high premium for being a celebrity? Maybe, but I think it's reasonable to keep in mind the known statement of Waylon Jennings, who actually stayed at the apartment. I think it's fair to assume that in the course of normal conversation, he would have asked Buddy what it cost to live there.

He is quoted as saying Buddy's rent was in the 400.00 per month range, which would be 3900.00 and change today, still a good chunk of cash.
