The situation as told to me back in the 80's...

S.H. was informed by N.P. that after "doubting" the existence for many years, he did in fact find misplaced or unused recordings in his archive. Some of these were the basis for
the 1986 album "for the first time anywhere".

Due to the buzz created by that release, and the rapid
surge in interest for the CD format, S.H. was very interested in accessing and releasing a CD that would be sourced from the genuine studio master tapes for the first time.

In exchange for making the true first generation tapes available, he would be paid a new higher royalty rate than he had been receiving.

No indication was given as to the extent of tapes supplied.

If only the 20 tunes that ended up on the 20 track cd and vinyl compilation, then it seems logical that many other recordings could have remained in Clovis. This would have meant that the song selection was pre determined, and that
N.P. would have to literally cut reels of tape to extract each track from alternate takes and other unwanted tunes.
It is more logical that entire reels were supplied to S.H.
with the promise that the contents would be transferred to digital.then the true original reels were to be returned.

I was told unequivocally that those original tapes were NOT
returned to Clovis, as the surface colour of the tape itself was wrong, indicating a more modern formulation. This indicated that copies were returned rather than the original
masters.
