I missed this back in April, perhaps others here did too:

Clovis News Journal
Apr 09, 2024

Concerns have been raised by the overseers of Clovis’ Norman Petty Studios over the use of the Petty name and other points by the Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce.

“It has come time to draw a line in the sand. I’m writing to let you (and others) know that we are not working with the Chamber and do not approve of the actions they are taking in association with our intellectual property and items,” Greg Walker wrote in a letter to Clovis City Manager Justin Howalt that was obtained by The News.

Walker is managing member of Norman Petty Studios.

Howalt was chosen as a recipient of the letter according to Walker for Howalt’s position as “a public servant.”

Walker wrote, “This competition and violation of NPS’s brand is being paid for with taxpayer capital outlay funds. Moreover, the lines of identity between NPS’s historic Norman Petty Studio and the Chamber’s endeavors are being skewed.”

Chamber Executive Director Ernie Kos told The News via email that “The Chamber has become aware of Mr. Walker’s concerns and have relayed to him that we had no plans of naming the recording studio after Norman & Vi Petty.”

“The Chamber has a long history of protecting and promoting the legacy of Norman & Vi Petty for the benefit of our community. We have always worked cooperatively with others who also care about the Petty’s legacy, and we will continue to do so,” Kos wrote.

A Feb. 23 Chamber news release announced plans for a “cutting-edge recording studio” that is planned at the Norman and Vi Petty Rock & Roll Museum.

“Now, this rich musical legacy will be revived in Clovis, with analog gear once again capturing the essence of music creation,” the release read.

Subsequent Chamber releases have referenced the planned recording studio as the “Clovis Sound Studio.”

Walker’s letter made a number of points of concern:

• NPS owns the rights to the name and likeness of Norman and Vi Petty and owns various trademarks related to their names.

• The Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce recently announced that it is developing a new professionally designed recording studio as part of the Norman and Vi Petty Rock & Roll Museum (the “R&R Museum”) that it operates. This new recording studio will apparently be using the name, likeness and trademarks of Norman and Vi Petty and NPS.

• NPS, has been a long-time supporter of the R&R Museum operated by the Chamber, as well as the Clovis Music Festival. NPS loaned many of the items exhibited at the R&R Museum to it.

Walker went on to write, “We find the idea of a recording studio operating alongside a museum that we’ve supported for years to be unacceptable and find it to be in competition with our business.”

The Norman Petty studio on Seventh Street is still in use, according to Walker.

In his letter to Howalt, Walker outlined NPS’ “greatest desire is to exist in harmony with the community we came from.”

Asked where things stand now, Walker said, “We’re trying to solve and resolve.”

Assistant City Manager Claire Burroughes, responding on behalf of Howalt who was out of town on Monday, said city officials had no comment.
