I respectfully disagree with the claim that anyone here, including Roddy Jordan, is "bragging" about anything.
Roddy mentioned that he owns some photos and casually mentioned that he isn't sure what his plans are to do with them in the future. Why is that so bad? What does he owe us?
I think we sometimes forget that collecting can be a hobby but it is also a bit of a sport---like fishing, hunting, or golf. It can be competitive. t know people who spent weeks, months, or years in pursuit of a single item--that doesn’t include the money---all because\of their love for the music of Buddy Holly and The Crickets---I’ve never understood why some feel need to share their thoughts about how that person should share it immediately and without cost or resistance?
Roddy Jordan is a passionate Buddy Holly fan, collector, researcher, historian and author. He owes us NOTHING, and yet he has shared his musical knowledge with friends and fans over and over. His books are highly sought after. John Goldrosen wrote a Buddy Holly biography over 50 years ago that many fans still consider “the standard” when it comes to books on Buddy. Chris Rees is THE AUTHORITY when it comes to photos of Buddy Holly and The Crickets and has helped fans around the world and the Buddy Holly Center with photo information. Chris Hopkins has worked his musical magic on cleaning up Holly recordings to the point that it sounds as though Buddy is sitting next to you while recording. Graham Harrison enjoys a collection of memorabilia that is the envy of most collectors.
Of course, the “granddaddy” of all fans is John Beecher, who has contributed over six decades of his life and career promoting the music and the lives of Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Peter Bradley Sr., Peter Bradley Jr., and their Buddy Holly Educational Foundation has picked up the baton and striving hard to keep Buddy’s music, his life, and his influence in the public eye for decades to come. And who could forget the collectors who are no longer with us? Joan Turner, Val Warren, and Bill Griggs quickly come to mind. The list shared here is woefully incomplete, as there are so many others who do their part to share their love of the music, and they should be thanked as well.
We are in this together. Let’s celebrate while we still can.
Rave On,
Randy Steele
