A few years ago I was talking to Noel Gallagher from the English group, 'Oasis'.
I was saying to him about music and it being what I call 'A general progression', in that people are continuously influenced by people who came before. Oasis were influenced by the Beatles, who in turn were influenced by Buddy Holly and The Crickets, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc. Then they in turn were influenced by Blues, country, hillbilly, Gospel, all kinds of things.
This will never end. There will always be links to Buddy Holly. He is well and truly routed in the world and culture of popular music. A pop or rock star of today, may have influence on some kid 50 years from now. That's the wonderful thing about music. It's things that are continuously passed on from generation to generation.
