 Here's an explanation I found on youtube:

"Frank Hughes my father was awarded an athletic scholarship from Texas Tech in 1956 and had a mutual friend with Buddy by the name of Roland Pike who introduced them to each other. They were the only two people in Lubbock Texas to own Fender Stratocasters at that time. Dads band was signed by a record label in California and felt the songs he had weren’t good enough so he and Buddy wrote some."
