In late 2003, I called Fender's corporate office and talked to a person that told me about Fender's plight with the unreasonable Ms Holly. The woman demanded a $1,000,000 payment, the first two production models, and 15% of sales on top of all of that. That I know as a fact. It is, however, conjecture on part that Holly's tussle with Fender Music Instrument Company "caused" the movie to "erroneously" depict Buddy as a Telecaster player, not a Stratocaster player. Ms Holly probably knew that Buddy's playing a Stratocaster on The Ed Sullivan Show had caused sales of Stratocasters to go through the roof.
