Hailey’s fridge masked her eyes slightly; once beautifully golden curls were now mere wavy and slightly greasy. This exposure did nothing for the large black bags that rested under her blue pools, or the bruise that was darkening each day. If one should look carefully enough, they would see too the markings on her neck, were she had clearly been grasped. Slightly self conscious of this fact, she pulled her collar higher up her neck line, though it simply fell back into place when Hailey’s hand was removed. Still hand in hand with the young girl, Hailey continued her strides, coming to a halt outside their old apartment door. She should have realized it was already inhabited by someone else by now but since that was the least of her worries, it had barley entered her mind.
Summer, now four years of age struggled slightly to keep up with Hailey’s pace, though she neither complained nor slowed her own. The young girl’s thick dark locks fell just past her shoulder blades giving her the eerie look of her mother, as much as Hailey liked to deny it. One thing could be said however, and that was that Summer Ford had her father’s unmistakable brown eyes. Big and vibrant, just looking into them reduced Hailey to tears at times. Summer’s pools flickered over the corridor…as if she had seen it somewhere before.
Hailey’s dial shot to towards the sound of a door opening a little further down the corridor. When Julie emerged, her stomach lurched. Maybe this was a bad idea, maybe she could just carry on the way things were. After all, Julie didn’t need Hailey coming and going in her life whenever she pleased, and burdening her. Her only other option being turning around and running away, Hailey locked Julie with a cold stare. Perhaps she didn’t mean to be so distant with Julie, but it didn’t seem the time or the place to be smiling. Hailey had frozen almost, just watching the woman realizing exactly who she was. Her blue pools were wide though watery as she watched in silence, Summer fiddling by her side. Julie had obviously noticed the wound to her face, and Hailey dropped her head watching the floor nervously. Her hand rose to her face and her slim fingers slowly and gently traced her swollen eye.
Hailey hesitated entering the apartment for a few seconds before deciding against her judgment and slowly made her way to the open door. She gently guided Summer through the door and before entering stopped, to give a look to Julie. Her emotions were blank and completely unreadable, though it was a look of gratitude, even if Julie didn’t know it. She then broke the eye contact and entered the apartment, letting her blue pools linger over the room for a minute. It was a lot better than were herself and Summer had been staying. Hailey made her way to the couch once more, taking Summer by the hand as she did so. She sank into the sofa and released Summer who immediately began to slowly pace the room as though inspecting.
Hailey waited for Julie to enter the room once more, giving a quick glance to Summer, just checking her location. A silence had fallen onto the place and an atmosphere you could cut with a knife had been bestowed. Hailey took a deep breath, pulling at her denim mini nervously. It took her a few seconds before she could gather the courage to speak. “Ju-Julie. I know I’m probably the last person you want to see”. She couldn’t muster more words than that. She self consciously pulled at her t-shirt collar once more, making any attempt possible to mask the many bruises.
