I agree with Tonya on this one. I realize that parents would like to see some kind of ranges so they can best determine what salary to offer. But the nanny business is not like any other! Every job is so unique. Each state has different rates based on availablity, if we are competing heavily with illegal workers, etc.

I think the most important thing for each parent to consider is what it is they want out of their nanny, the hours she works and what is the most they can personally afford to pay. In the long run, that is what it boils down to. Doesn't matter what the average is if you can't afford it. And if good quality nanny service is what is important and the family has to the means to pay it, then it doesn't matter what their neighbor pays. The better the pay, the better qualifications they will get. Nannies are like everyone else. If they do a great job, put in those long hours, they want to know their job is important. Every business, no matter what it is, the employee feels the most valued when their pay reflects what they do. They leave when they feel they desire more pay and can't get it at their present job. We are in the compassion business and we make sacrifices for our families. But nannies are truly happy when they love the family, feel adequately compensated. Each family has to decide what they can afford and each nanny has to decide what it takes to have a quality life and enough funds to play for retirement. Most of the time, we are on our own there, so we have to make sure we have enough that we can put aside into an IRA.

But that's just my opinion and I realize people love concrete ranges.
