Hi Suzanne, Congratulations on your twins! You are going to have so much fun!! Multiples are the best!!!
Julie gave you some great info, and yes, I am a nanny who specializes in multiples care. In your area, I would guess that you would be looking at about $18-$20 per hour on average for an experienced multiples nanny. I would definately go with an experienced multiples nanny, or at the very least a nanny who has worked in a nanny share with two children of the same age. Something that I do for families in your situation who find a nanny they like but who has no prior multiples experience is come in and work with her for 1-2 weeks to teach her (and you if needed) how to work effectively with multiples to make life easier for everyone, so if you cannot find one, feel free to contact me at my business address tonya@nannyanswers.com and I would be happy to discuss this with you further. You can find great nannies through agencies, online, through the paper, through word of mouth, through your local mothers of multiples groups, and through agencies that specialize in it. Here in Phoenix we have an agency called "Minding Multiples" and all they do is twins and higher order multiples. As far as vacation with a part timer, the nanny should earn at least 2 hours of vacation time for each hour of work in one week on an annual basis. So, if she is working 3 days at 11 hours per day, that is 33 hours per week of work and 66 hours of vacation time. She should be free to take at least half of that at her discretion if at all possible. She should also get at least 33 hours of paid sick/personal time per year. One thing I often suggest to parents is that they pay out any unused sick time at the end of the year as a bonus. This way your nanny only uses those days if she is really sick, and you have a way to give her a little bonus. As far as holidays, if a major holiday falls on a work day, then it is a paid day off for her. If it falls on a non work day, then it is not a paid holiday unless you choose to give it as an extra benefit. Yes, yes, and yes, you absolutely should have a contract between yourself and your nanny. There is one that will be available shortly on my website, at www.nannyanswers.com (give it another week for reconstruction) that you can download and use. Feel free to modify it however fits your situation. Other benefits to consider, especially if you need to offer a lower wage: sports tickets, gym membership, airline tickets, theater tickets, gift certificates, health/dental/vision insurance, retirement account contributions, etc.. Get creative. You would be amazed what can be a great benefit to some people. Good luck, and feel free to come back here anytime for help and to offer us suggestions!
