Hello Sharon,
Well just to let you know that you are not alone with the same problem. I hated those "speed bumps" most of all when i got them as well. It was particular painful when you try to close your teeth together by mistake in those first 2 weeks of wearing braces when the teeth hurted like hell!
I could not eat anything apart from mashed potato and other things i could just swallow without shewing, but it does gets better.. in about 3 weeks of having them, i was only able to slightly bite on one of the sides. And then as a time goes your teeth will move in such a position that you'd be able to eat most of medium hard food. Now after 3 months of having them i can eat quite normal. You'd get used to cut the food into small bits so it would be easier to bite and also chew it on "one tooth"
So i know how you are feeling as i felt the same way..
Good luck!
