In reply to: boni 's message, "5th Dugong CYF-USA Summer Camp" on 23:30:40 06/10/08 Tue

So the event that we’ve been waiting for already came and went…nalpasen ti Dugong CYF-USA Summer Camp 2008, and it was held June 27-29. It was very heartwarming to see returning campers with the glow on their faces, and of course, pati na rin ang mga new campers. We were delighted to be back at Camp Wrightwood after holding last year’s at Lazy W Ranch. Camp Wrightwood is better by much in many ways, to include the cool Camp Wrightwood staff. We sacrificed to not watch the Pacquiao-Diaz fight just so we can attend our annual summer camp, as we did again two years ago when the Pacman fought Larios.

This year’s theme was Steams in the Desert, based from Isaiah 35:6, which says Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing; for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Interspersed throughout 3 days were worship times with devotions and hymns & praise songs.

There was a total of 25 full-time campers, namely Dante, Elsie & Aldwin Aldana, Billy & Omar Estoque, Bong, Lea, Ally & Samirah Go, Boni & Vinya Gulla, Willie & Gabriel Inocencio, Kevi, OD, Thayer & Amara Meru, Bob & Louie Mina, Nick, Imelda & Elaine Mina, Melissa Orenstein, Jaime Pronoble and Eugene Ringpis. New campers were brothers Billy and Omar from San Jose via Las Vegas, and the Merus of Temple City. Part-time campers were Tim Barros, Vani Gulla and Josh Reyes. Also 7 members of Umingan’s Vergara clan paid us a visit Saturday pm. But this year we missed the company of the Cacheros, Evangelistas, Sta. Marias, grandmas Rosita Ferrer & Erlinda Inocencio, and the Diomampo brothers.

Everyone pitched in into the activities, be it cooking, dishwashing, sweeping or just by simply being there to coach was a contribution in itself. Everybody brought food….food that could have sustained us for a week, which included pinakbet, nilaga, intuno nga ikan ken tarong, kappi, pokpoklo, deserts lelot balatong and champorado. Thanks to the cooks, worship leaders, speakers, game facilitators, musicians, and Kevi, who became the camp’s impromptu resident pastor. I hope he’ll accept our offer to become our permanent pastor.

Sportswise, the swimming and basketball were always fun, and so was archery. It was so entertaining to watch 5-year old Samirah, daughter of Bong & Lea, and who has attended all of our 5 summer camps, shoot arrows for the first time…and she was able to hit the target! When she attended our first camp in 2004, she was just a baby with chocolate smeared on her nose, cheeks and around her mouth…ngayon ay marunong ng magpapana. Nobody played volleyball and ping pong although they were available.

The games on Saturday night were a lot of fun…the unplanned hep-hep hooray (hip-hip hurrah) (patterned from Wowowee) was the hit that made us laughing sooo hard all night. There would have been more games had it not been for the untimely departure of the Aldanas Saturday night. The night was capped by the customary concert of Bong, Willie and yours truly with walang kamatayang hits of the Beatles, Bee Gees, Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, John Denver, Scorpions and our very own Ilocano, Pangasinan, Kapampangan and Tagalog folk songs.

Even though I’ve been branded the paparazzo, I still wasn’t able to take pics of all the activities. But you can email me if you want to view the 200-or-so of them.

Next summer camp will be on June 26-28, 2009, the location still to be determined. I know there are those who live or live not too far from SoCal who are just sumirsirip—the Millans, Moneses, Navarros, Vibats and the Lacuestas to name a few, we’ll be pleased to have you with us next time.

Suggestions for next time: bring forehead mounted flashlights and karaoke.

Was the camp a success? We have to hear it from the rest of the campers themselves. (But with the Lord guiding us, why wouldn’t it be?)
