No, I think you're bang on in that you have to proof the exercises with specifics within the requirements of each individual exercise.

But you still need to teach the core.

DoH as example. If the exercise is taught in a core component approach (and a non-patterned manner), you should have an easier time of it come the distractions. The dog will have the understanding of the basic exercise to fall back upon and disregard any distractions. (In an ideal world).

That said, obviously you have to try and proof against every type of situation you can imagine, but as you found out, there's always going to be a judge one step ahead.

I think, what may get people in trouble at times is reliance upon the same articles or scenarios in their training. One needs to tap into the various veins of imagination running throughout all the members of the club in order to train Mondio successfully.

We would have to bring three new articles to every training session and each member would set up a new DoH scenario each week. We tried very hard to screw the other guy's dog up.

I believe it helped the dog's understanding of the core exercise as there was rarely a repeated situation.
