Subject: HVAC on 83 Regal

I am no expert on HVAC, but I am sure I have a problem with mine, that if some could help, I sure would like the assistance.
You see, I was driving home yesterday, when decided to turn on the forward defroster. Almost immediately, steam comes pouring out into the car, so bad that even after rolling dowin my window, I was still losing viability. Fortunatley, I was able to get out of traffic safely. At that point I discovered that if I just turn of the system altogether and set the temperture to cold, I would be ok.
Then this morning, I thought I'd chance it and take the car to work and not turn on the system, which was fine and good. Then about four miles into my commute, I see steam start coming out of the defroster vents. Being close to home, I just rolled down the window, and make my way back home.
Now, as I said I am no expert on the topic, but I figure that after 20 years, the heater core has finally sprung a leak, and the steam coming through is from the heater hoses. I assume that a replacement of the heater core is in order, but I would like to be sure before I begin ripping my dash apart and spending money on parts. So if there is some onethat that could please point me in the right direction, I would appreciate the help.
