I've not tried playing Starcraft over the network in XP as of yet. However, I may still be able to provide a helpful piece of advice. I suggest downloading the most recent version of starcraft, which can be attained most easily by connecting to Battle.net, but can also be obtained by visiting www.battle.net in your web browser. The latest version allows you to select a new multiplayer option: the Local Area Network UDP option. This will allow you to play via a TCP/IP connection as opposed to the now-shunned IPX method. Hope this helps, despite its belated status.
