From a former franchisee: Smith's is full of lies. One of many examples: On their web page, they say they have an everchanging and developing curriculum. They haven't changed it in years! One look at their poorly considered curriculum would send any experienced ELT teacher running for the hills. Their entire curriculum is about as substantial as 1/9 the curriculum of any other major school. It does not take into consideration any modern ELT methodology. There are no CD's, so listening skills work cannot take place. It's so small, very little lexis is taught. Grammar systems work is incomprehensive at best. There is virtually no text for students to read, so reading skills work cannot take place. There is no writing skills work. There is no collocation work. In fact, there is no text book, unless you consider 15 computer printouts in a ring-binder a text book.

Training, as well, does not incorporate any modern ELT practices. They train you to use the CCC method, a method made-up by Smith's which is based on the PPP method of teaching. And another method, also made up by Smith's, in which you write words in an "L" configuration on the board, and have students repeat a story after you using the words on the board. I have to stress, these methods are made up by Smith's! Made up! They have no bearing on or basis in actual teaching methodology.
