Tercia, indeed, you have a problem. I can only tell you what we do with our dogs. Whether that offers a solution at all to you, you will have to evaluate against your own circumstances.
Firstly, it has always been my advice that a stafford should never be left outside, unattended, in it's yard. I KNOW that for most people, that's not always possible (work hours etc) but that's the idea. My husband and I both work, however both our dogs get shut in the house, one in the kitchen/lounge area, and the other in the bathroom area. Both are left with water and their breakfasts, as well as various chew toys. They are very good about not messing in the house, however, if they do, not a biggie, we clean it up. They are worth more to us than the effort it takes to clean a few tiles. They also both get walked EVERY morning, before we go to work. It takes some extra effort and time, of course. I normally get home, at about 3pm, usually no later than 4pm, and we leave the house in the mornings at 7am. They often get walked in the evening as well.
I know many people will disagree with me, saying a dog needs a garden to play in in the day, however, what with dog poisonings and possible thieves (who would want to steal our dogs!), we simply cannot take that chance. Ours stay INSIDE, and they play in the garden when we are at home.
If you are worried about possible destruction of your house, the only other solution I can offer, is crate-training.
