Although my dog is very good on his own, both inside and outside, I will never be able to concentrate on anything at work if I leave my dog outside on his own. I just feel that anything can happen to him when he is left outside unattended.
I know many people who crate their dogs and swear by it. I'm sure he'll feel safer if he is inside. Nelline's idea of putting them in an easy to clean area in the house sounds like a good idea to me.
I also know of people who has a dog run, an enclosed area outside where the dog can stay during the day. I've seen dog runs that has roofs too. This, however, won't necessarily address his nervousness, only his escaping.
