Subject: Karla Kontroversy in Kanada

Just wondering if you guys have heard anything about the new release called "Karla"? It is a movie based on the life of Karla Homolka, who, if you are not aware was the partner in crime of Paul Bernardo (known as "The Scarborough Rapist" at the time). Bernardo was a serial rapist in the Toronto area, and all the way to St. Catherines (near Niagara Falls).

Basically, everyone thought at the time of his arrest that he had manipulated Homolka into helping him, but AFTER striking a deal that allowed her to be released from prison after only 12 years, Karla described her willing involvement in the crimes, which including drugging her sister so Bernardo could rape and kill her while Homolka videotaped it.

They also killed two other girls, and believe me when I say this...the mere mention of these girls names, Kristen French, and Leslie Mahafee, sends chills down the spine of every Canadian young and old (I was only 13 when this happened, and I remember it vividly)

Anyway, when it was decided that a major motion picture was going to be made about the event, it received huge controversy up here, and now that it has been released, it is all over the headlines again. Many feel that it is disgusting to profit from the deaths of these young girls, and I can't disagree, but I am very intrigued and I hope to see the film, out of curiosity, if nothing else.

The lead character in the film (Karla Homolka), is played by Laura Prepon (Donna, from "That 70's Show"). I saw an interview with her this past week, and some of the questions really stood out to me.

First, she was asked how she got into character for this role, and she responded by saying that it was difficult to put herself in a state like that, and that she sometimes cried between takes.

She said that when she first accepted the part, she knew it would be controversial, but she had no idea it would be as bad as it was. She stated that, as any good actress does, the first thing she did after accepting the role was to make an attempt to come up to Canada and meet Homolka, in order to observe her mannerisms, and attempt to understand her state of mind. She called the Canadian government, and inquired about Homolka's whereabouts, to which she was told that she would NEVER be given permission to speak to Homolka, and not to inquire about this any further, as it was 100% non-negotiable. At that point, the person she was speaking to hung-up on her, and that was the end of it.

The other thing that struck me was Prepon's response when asked what she would say to the families of the victims if she ever met them. She said that she had no idea how to answer that, and said she would likely be speechless, as words would not properly describe the guilt she would feel.

Sorry for the length of this post, but I am very interested in hearing what kind of coverage this film has received in other countries...I know for a fact that the story has been covered on CNN numerous times in the last 2 weeks, most notably by Nancy Grace.

If you are aware of this situation, what are your thoughts?
