Saw it again with somebody who hadn't seen it, and while the movie's good it doesn't stand up as well as it did when you're being overawed by the effects for the first time.

The biggest problem is that Superman actually does very little to overcome the movie's criminal plot - Lex's invention of real estate by seeding the ocean floor with Kryptonian crystals stolen from Superman's Fortress of Solitude. Sure, Superman picks up the new continent and hurls it into space, but Lex's heavies are killed by a falling tower of rock, and Lex himself escapes - after stabbing Superman and leaving him for dead, no less. You'd think this sort of act would deserve payback in the same movie but, no, Superman apprehends none of the major villains.

The premise is also superfluous and exists only to create the plot's twist - Lois's son Jason being Superman's son. But it's useless. It might create story opportunities in future installments, but we want to see Superman movies for Superman, not for personal subplots, especially one involving a prospective Superboy. We want to see Lois as a single babe, not a mother.

Lastly, Clark's absolutely redundant. Why'd he even bother to return? He's in about three or four individual scenes, and none of them very weighty. Also, how aren't these people - these investigative journalists - querying that Superman and Clark disappeared at about presumably the same time, and then returned at the same time. Isn't this coincidental? (Happens in Batman Begins too, with Batman appearing right around the same time Bruce Wayne returns from a seven year absence in which he was presumed dead).

Superman Returns is still a good movie, it has fantastic effects, great action sequences, and some awesome moments of homage to previous incarnations of Superman - from the original movies, to the comics, to the black & white George Reeves' series - but the excess fat of the story (involving the five year absence and the twist) could've been trimmed (if not omitted), while the criminal plot and Superman's rescue of the world could've been fleshed out.
