Subject: Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, Running With Scissors

Pan's Labyrinth: Set during the Spanish Civil War, this is the story of a young girl dealing with her ill pregnant mother and her new stepfather, a brutal military commander waging a war against a band of guerrilla freedom fighters. And of top of that, magical creatures have appeared to her and told her that she's a fairy princess and must complete three quests to take her rightful place in the Royal family. A very beautiful, sometimes very strange film that I enjoyed quite a lot.

Children of Men: One of the bleakest films I've seen in awhile, but also one of the best. A very grim story about civilization crumbling and falling into chaos in the wake of humanity mysteriously losing the ability to procreate. As depressing as the story is, ultimately the movie is about the almost magical power of hope to lift people up in times of abject misery. Highly, highly recommended viewing.

Running With Scissors: I made the cardinal mistake of reading the book before seeing the movie, so I didn't enjoy this one as much as I might have otherwise. It's a memoir by a guy named Augusten Burroughs, who survived a childhood that absolutely defies description. The movie is very good, and Annette Bening gives a great performance, but you'd be better off just reading the book instead.
