Sicko
One of the only non-political documentaries by Michael Moore where he attacks the healthcare system and petitions the government for universal healthcare. Moore delves deep into the healthcare and drug industries files, exposes the nightmare of being terminally ill in the American healthcare system and visits different countries that have universal healthcare such as Canada, Great Britain, France and, yes, communist Cuba, with mind-blowing results. By the end of the film, it made me wonder where our country has gone wrong being the richest country in the world and housing one of the worst medical industries in the world. It's absolutely provacative, no matter what side of the aisle you sit on. You'll be happy to know, Rocket, that Hillary Clinton gets deservedly skewered in the film.
Black Snake Moan (DVD)
A brilliant southern gothic tale of a love scorned blues singer (is there any other kind?), played by Samuel L. Jackson, who happens upon a drugged up, recently raped and sexually addicted woman (Christina Ricci) that has been dumped on his property. He feels as if God has left her there for him to discover and to heal. In an unorthadox attempt to cure her, he chains her to a radiator in his house and puts her through a rigorous rehab. What comes out of it is a rather touching father figure trying to steer his daughter in the right direction and make something more of herself than the town harlot. With a fantastic soundtrack, excellent cast and a tight script, I highly recommend this one.
Street Fight (DVD)
A documentary about one of the dirtiest mayoral races on record. It features Newark, New Jersey, mayor of 16 years, Sharpe Davis against a 32 year old Yale graduate with big aspirations for a deteriorating city, Corey Booker. Davis is a smiling dictator who has no qualms about ruining the lives of those that oppose him and goes well out of his way to destroy the ambitious Booker. Well worth checking out if you have any interest in politics at all.
More later.
