I don't think Signs was really meant to have a twist as opposed to many events being pre-empted - the advice of Gibson's dying wife, the kid's asthma saving him from the alien's poison, that sorta crap.

Signs was just awful. It builds up beautifully, I'll give Shyhardtospellaman that, but when it's revealed that water is deadly to aliens . . . you just shake your head in disbelief. Why then come to a damn planet which is 80% water? Which has moisture in the air? It's just absurd.

As for The Village, again, I found the build-up beautiful, but the pay-off really invalidated everything which had come before, (or so I felt). It just made the movie seem superfluous, and I did get the sense was there for the sake of the twist.

Then again, I'm not a big wrap for Shymahardtospellaman's work. I thought that The Sixth Sense existed only for the sake of the twist, that everything leading up was only there so he could surprise us at the end. The movie itself lacked a grander purpose, (think Stir of Echoes).

Unbreakable had a lot of potential, but never really seemed to be able to decide whether it was some sort of life-drama, or a superhero movie. Some times it goes one way, as if it's this exploration of the human condition, and then other times you feel it could turn into just another superhero-serial.

The one thing I'll give Shardtospellaman is that he forecast events beautifully, from the aforementioned crap in Signs, to the description of supervillains in Unbreakable which you're made to realize fits Samuel L. Jackson perfectly, etc., he does know how to build events logically and creatively.
