Subject: My thoughts on M. Night Shyamalan's movies
In reply to: Silk 's message, "Re: The twist of Signs" on 01:46:10 01/24/05 Mon

THE SIXTH SENSE - This is the only Shyamalan film I don't own, although I thought it was a good movie. To some degree, I agree with Silk that the ending is what made people think the film was absolutely spectacular. As a whole, I see it as a good drama/sypernatural film, but it should have never been up for best picture. There were some legit eerie scenes and the payoff was excellent. I just think it's a bit overrated.

UNBREAKABLE is my very favorite Shyamalan movie. I thought it was excellent from top to bottom. I never classified the film as a super-hero movie at all. The comic book aura was simply creative added bonus to a great dramatic film. I really enjoyed character development surrounding Jackson's character and the mystery surrounding Willis'. I also enjoyed the relationship rebuilding within Willis' family.

SIGNS - Like The Six Sense, I thought Signs was a good movie for the genre, but had a few problems that kept me from considering it "great". I actually enjoyed most of the movie, but like Silk, I thought the ending seemed very corny. I liked the hidden meanings in the dying wife's words, as well as the destiny of Gibson's children's roles. However, once that CGI green fake-looking alien appeared and the realization that the aliens had been so completely unprepared to invade, I felt quite let down. I kept thinking that, because of the narrow perception of the film, there would be a surprise alternate explanation as to what was happenning. This was one of those times a Shyamalan "twist" would have been welcome. I also thought there was a bit too much comedy in the film, considering the plot.

The Village - A really enjoyed this film. I loved the concept of a group of people who ventured into dangerous land to escape society. I liked the mythological aspect of the people having a truce with unknown monsters who live outside the perimiter of the village. I thought the premise was just fantastic. I enjoyed the characters and the love story... and I REALLY liked the ending.

I think, to some degree, the success of the Sixth Sense has forced people to hold too high of standards for Shyamalan's film-making. I like his Alfred Hitchock style of eerie creativity. I don't expect him to strive for Oscar gold with each effort.
