I actually think the sound improvement is one the major benefits. Decent score and sound effects can add a lot to a movie, and DVD means more people are likely to hear movies closer to their original cinema sound. As you said the picture quality is also an advantage, particularly as most are available in widescreen.
The rental disc thing is a good point. VHS tapes really only degraded through repeated use - people generally didn't damage them putting them in and taking them out of their player. Whilst DVDs don't degrade over time because of the repeated use, people are much more likely to damage them (especially when they don't own them).
