Shakespeare is basically describing a dying season. He does not necessarily make it sound dreary but he gives off the feeling of a dark presence and a loss of some sort.

Well I interperted the poem as kind of growing up. Liek a dying childhood. Maybe my mind reads thing incorectly, I do not know.So the season with the dying leaves and the disappearing sun seem to correlate with loss of innocence.
