Well the whole .013 AU's is a hair in astronomical terms... well 5 million miles is smaller than a pubic hair in astrinomical terms. Considering earth could fit into Jupiters red spot over 3 times....

Research may need to be done on astroids in space. As does research for SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intellegence) but right now Americas main priority is a missle defense system - or should be. Saddam Hussien... Aparently the UN didnt keep him in check until AFTER he invaded kuiwait. It didnt stop him from using loads of Chemical weapons against IRan in the IRAQ/IRAN 8 year war in the late 70's early 80's. It didnt stop Hitler until AFTER he took over most of Europe. Wasnt really a strong UN back then but the people that should have kept him "in check" didnt. So who is to say that China will be kept in check? Nothing. If they want Tiawan, they will take it. And if that means taking out a few American ships and bases with a nuke rocket, not talking ICBM here, talking about a small warhead, they will probley do it. Then when we go to war with them, they may ICBM our country. I would rather take care of the problem that we can see and know about then worry about something we have no clue about. We should guard our back door, but worry about where the troops are massed. (And dont try the whole "the flank is your weakness" thing because we are talking about astroids... something uncontrollable.

And besides... what are we going to do about space rocks? We cant put a laser in space to shoot them down because of the very UN you speak of. Their laws prohibiting weapons in space invclude ALL weapons, whether for world defense or world domination. So before we can do ANYTHING, your UN needs to unseat their rectal cranial inversion and fix something.
