A few possibilities I can think of off the top of my head are: Dead battery, Loose connection on the main
+ wire to the starter, bad solenoid, and a bad or binding starter motor. I'd start with the most obvious first, and check to make sure the battery is still up, and then procede to check any of the wiring that you unhooked to make sure everything is reconnected properly and making good contact. If that fails to solve the problem, you can have the solenoid and starter checked by a local parts store to determine if everything is as it should be. With the starter engaging, but not turning the engine, I'd say the most likely culprit is the main + connection somewhere between the battery and the starter. Do your lights go dim when you try to start it?

It's possible the noise you heard was the Bendix drive in the starter staying engaged and hitting the flywheel. This would explain noise than no noise then no start. Replacing the starter is not the hard. I'd try tightening the bolts to the converter too, but I doubt that is where you problem lies they just don't pop out one day and then go away the next. I've been wrong before though.
