Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, has set the target of increasing its share of the chip market to 24 percent by 2005 on the basis of smart card chip technology, they said. The company is to spend up to 3 trillion won (US$2.5 billion) earmarked for this year's facility investment and upgrades on developing applied products for smart card business. Currently, the company holds such security-related core technology as 32-bit "crypto" processor, 16-bit central processing unit (CPU) called "CalmRisc." It has also marketed SIN, an integrated-circuit (IC)-embedded card, for GSM (global system for mobile communication), a wireless standard dominating the second-generation markets of Europe. Hynix is also planning to develop IC products related to system on chip (SOC), according to company officials. With a focus on the Chinese market, it is developing USIM card, which can be used for GSM and CDMA (code division multiple access) handsets. It also seeks to forge strategic partnerships with European companies and plans to develop "RF combi card" used for transportation in the first half of this year. "Smart card business is the next-generation technology, where domestic and foreign semiconductor makers are making all-out efforts to get ahead of competitors in total secrecy," an industry insider said. "Within this year, a series of new smart cards will make their debut." Market research firm Dataquest estimated the world smart card chip market will grow to US$32 billion by 2005 from last year's US$1.4 billion." « Previous Message Next Message » This message has been viewed times Report a BullBoards Violation Ignore geoffo Post Reply View Threads [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
