's message, "Maria is on the new board" on 20:56:47 08/18/03 Mon
I know there's been a lot of Maria-related controversy out here on these messageboards, and I'd just like to weigh in here with my comments. In the past, I lurked, and occasionally posted, on Puckbunnies Unite, so I'm very familiar with the whole MAT saga. I know there's any number of people out there who feel that Maria betrayed their trust. In fact, after MAT was exposed as an Internet fraud, I very clearly remember someone on one of the boards (not sure if it was this one or not) comparing that betrayal of trust to feeling as if they had been raped. As someone who (unfortunately) has several rape victims in my immediate family, I found that comparison to be rather disturbing. However, aside from the betrayal-rape comparison, my issue, and the question I'd really like to ask here, is why MAT continues to be an ongoing controversy. I understand the betrayal of trust issue. But on the other hand, this is the Internet. Having said that, it's so important to remember to take online tales (for the most part) with a grain of salt. So Maria is less-than-truthful. So what? It goes without saying that honesty is definitely the best policy, but exactly what damage have her lies really done to anyone? Her lies make her, and her alone, look bad. In the end, her lies were what did her in, and now, her credibility has been completely shot to hell. So the only real damage that's been done here is the damage MAT did to herself. Right?
Rather than continually re-hashing the pathetic story of a lonely young woman out in cyberspace, she is someone to be pitied, not to be ridiculed. So she lied about being a VP of a record company. Big deal. Who among us honestly believed that story in the first place? VPs and other top-level executives are far too busy in their professional lives to devote as much time to hosting a hockey gossip website as Maria did. Makes sense, doesn't it? So she lied about modeling gigs and a thin frame. C'mon, gang. Does any of this really matter in the grand scheme of things? Of course not.
Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not defending MAT's actions. In fact, I'm quite the advocate for truth and honesty. But it's all in the past at this point, and as I stated earlier, the rather-pathetic MAT should be pitied, not put down.
Thanks for your time and your ear.
