I still say the original Derby Bus Station should be retained. Apart from it's architectural significance as an art-deco structure, there is nothing wrong with the current design.

I personally have driven many vehicles, both large and small, through the bus station over the years without ever encountering any kind of problems. True, some buses have hit the canopies with their back ends when swinging out. But this is nothing more than carelessness on the part of some of the less able drivers (of whom there seem to be more and more!)

As has been pointed out already, nose-in-bays make for longer dwell times at the stops, increase the risk of accidents when reversing, and will not accomodate so many vehicles per hour.

The current design of bus station has been working well in the city since the 1930s. And I would suggest that would still be the case had some big developer not come along and offered the council a heap of money for the site! All they will be interested in are the rtail units etc they can bulid above it. Leaving the new bus station as a cheap, dark, draughty basement!

This surely is council corruption at it's very worst. One wonders who is getting the brown envelopes stuffed full of cash to allow the current plans to take place?

Even when the new bus station is constructed, because the development will be private you can bet your bottom dollar operators will be charged every time one of their vehicles uses it. And as with other places up and down the country, this means that many operators will opt to terminate their buses in the over crowded streets instead. This in turn will mean a walk for passengers through all weathers from one service terminating in the bus station to their connecting service which could be on the other side of the city! Leaving Derby without any coherent point of interchange.

If the bus station has worked for over 60 years, why now spend a fortune mending something that ain't broken!!!!

Andy.
