Drill a group of 4 1/2" holes in the top, in a tight pattern, square or in line is best.

Make yourself a little wedge of metal that will cover the holes when you want to. Mount the wedge of metal with a small nut and bolt.

Seal your door with a good hi temp gasket material.

I have a similiar water smoker and have made these mods. BIG difference.

I also put a control on the incoming air, on the very bottom of the smoker.
