Hi there,

I would just like to ask why English teachers feel the need to ask kids to take it in turn to stand up in class and read from the latest book that the class is studying. I'm 45 now and struggled with reading through primary school.
When starting secondary school the only issue that I had was that I was going to be made to read out loud in front of others. It brought me out in a cold sweat. I practised reading all through the holidays to help improve my reading.
When I started school,it happened one day in English I was told to stand up and read. My heart started pounding and my blood rushing,my mouth went dry and I shock,I had to read two full pages with the words jumbling up.I don't know if they jumble up because of Dyslexia or shear panic.I have to say there was another boy in my class that was far worse than me and that gave me great pleasure for some strange reason. However There were two guys how's reading was fab.
I didn't know at the time but these guys were obviously involved in drama in some way. That's why they new how to read well. It wasn't down to the speed they read but the expression and the controlled pauses.I was impressed. These guys are both now actors one played Danny Blue in a English program called The Hussle among other things and another was in Merlin Mark Warren and Gary Oliver both live and work in London. Teachers really need to address this terrifying ordeal that kids go through and help them with Drama which I believe will in turn help to improve the reading skills of all.
I love reading now but If I was asked to read out loud even now I'd be straight back in that horrid zone once again. This has stopped me getting a job where I would have to deal with this issue.
Bring on Drama for kids to help them teachers, don't be cruel!
