I felt my duvet shake, and at first I thought it was just the wind through the open window, but it persisted, and I was forced to poke my head out to discover the source of my disturbance. My ears crumpled as I realised there would be no way to simply pretend I did not exist. It was Phil. As much as I loved him, and he cared for my where our parents so miserably failed, in that moment I really wished he didn't exist. If I had realised what would happen later, I would never have wished such a thing, but I was, at that time, blissfully ignorant of such matters.
"Terry!" he whispered gently, so as not to wake me too abruptly. He waited until he could be sure I was awake, and then picked out a clean tunic from the wardrobe for me. One of my smarter ones - I hardly ever wore it, for it had a stiff, decidedly annoying collar, but I was in no position to argue. I knew he was only trying to help, and that was the only reason I got up without complaint, and donned the tunic, scratching my neck, but trying not to look too irritated. He held the door open for me, and we headed down to breakfast.
