Subject: "Designated Dead Innocents" and their role in canon and fics...(r)

It seems that every week, in every second television show (and movie, for that matter), we are introduced to the "DDI" character, aka the Designated Dead Innocent. In the Star Trek universe, they were known as 'red shirts', and you would all know the character - they're the young girl/boy who has one line (usually about how much "they're always admired the hero of the show and got into that same line of work because of them") before they're tragically struck down by a hail of bullets/laser blasts/very sharp dagger.

LFN was no stranger to this character - I think we could all come up with DDIs from various episodes. What I'd like to know is how well you think this formula crosses over into fan fiction. If the writers of the actual show constantly used the "Don't worry, I'll protect you - bang! - uh-oh, sorry about that..." angle, would using the same plot device in a story result in a 'Section feel', or would it feel like a tired old twist?
