in order to get more of the canon characters whom I love. Original characters, be they male or female, are perfectly fine so long as they don't displace canon characters as the center of attention, especially if their presence serves to move the plot along or they enable an aspect of one of the canon characters to be illuminated.

With rare exceptions, however, I don't care for OC-*focused* fanfic, and it doesn't really matter to me whether the OC is a Mary Sue or not. (Although the Mary Sue version will increase my level of irritation.) The only LFN writer who has regulary forced me to make exceptions to this preference is sk -- her OCs are so well-written and genuinely *interesting* that I don't care that the canon cast fades into the background. Otherwise, my attitude is that if I want to read about OCs, I'll pick up a professionally published novel.

  • I don't think so. In LFN I actually think self-inserts are a *potentially* bigger pitfall (r) -- Nell, Tuesday, February 01, 04:19:48pm
