That's perhaps the most intriguing aspect of AU to me -- playing around with "environmental" aspects of characterization. It's fun to try to replicate them in different ways, but it's also fun to explore what the character could have been like *without* them.

One of my many probably-never-will-be-written AU plotbunnies is a "what if" scenario along the lines of: what if everything in the characters' early lives had been exactly the same *except* that Section One didn't exist, and so there was no recruitment to interrupt the course their lives were taking? Where would they all have wound up? (Dealing with Birkoff, who *grew up* in Section, might pose a challenge in this scenario, though, but I'm sure I could come up with something.) This scenario really ofces me to think about the effect of Section on each of them, for better or for worse, and it's a fun thought experiment for that reason.
