I wait and just stick to daydreaming the story until I get so much 'untold' backup that it starts to flow out again.

Of course, my publication rate is way down - and I have about a dozen WIP now - and I drift back and forth between them as the story backlog in my head directs. Not aimlessly, and not without progress - but it is slow, and very uneven - and RL can affect the speed *alot.*

I know that a regular writing routine helps many, and it is true that once I get going - sticking with it is more than half the battle. Unfortunetly, even in my RL writing, once something happens that knocks me off my routine (even as simple as an unexpected committee meeting! Blergh), it can take a long time to get it back.
