Subject: Something that worked for me
In reply to: Mary 's message, "Help, writer in distress!" on Wednesday, November 09, 04:20:23pm

was to send my "crap" to a non-writer/voracious reader friend who is brutally honest and say, "This is crap. Help!" I don't send any other part of the story; what I've sent is out of context for the reader, so it's a challenge for us both.

But I get terrific feedback. "Why does Michael do that?" "I don't think Walter would act that way because..." "What exactly is Nikita trying to tell the recruit? I don't get it" If my reader doesn't get it, it's not written well, and I need to either fix it or tank it. It sometimes works to get a reader's perspective when you're wandering. I'm not suggesting a beta reader; just someone to shove you over a rough spot.

If you're completely blocked, that's a whole new ball game. I've got a WIP that's been stagnant for six months, but I've been thinking about it lately, and how I'd like to rework it. I've got another that's a year old, and some day I intend to pick up the pieces. Meanwhile, I'm writing fictlets in the Friday Challenges to keep the brain alive while I ponder.

Everyone above has given you great advice. I hope you find something that works for you.
