Subject: the gory details - a longish story

So here's the deal with the start of work. It goes back a bit and the background is important...

In June of last year my boss, Terry, was offered the opportunity to resign from Concordia just 2 weeks after she had been promoted in rank to full professor. The reasons include the fact that she is not a tactful communicator orally or in written form and as she is also opinionated she made many crabby - including me on occasion. She is easily mis-understood and her motivations often appear egocentric even when they are in truth not. Her demotion was likley a result of a pissing match between the president of the University and her.

Fast forward to August after appeals to administration on Terry's behalf and because I refused the position of interim program director - Terry is in place and with a contract that says program director - good through June of 07. I still don't have a signed contract with the University and apply to UWM to get the program director position. UWM has more than one open line (director, and 2 faculty lines) - so Terry applies as well to UWM but states that she doesn't want to be in competition with me for the director job. UWM interviews us both and then separates the transitional program director position and the entry-level program director position offering my the transitional program. I take it and start in Jan.

Terry continues to push/pull with UWM and Concordia now not certain she wants to go to UWM but not comfortable staying at Concordia where they trashed her unmercifully. So, in some ways to honestly negotiate and in some ways to buy time she starts putting requests into the offer at UWM that delay hire. Those requests include re-organizing the College of HEalth Sciences creating a new division of rehab science, and coming in with tenure. Remember (especially with the re-organization thing) she is not a tactful woman so this looks to the UWM faculty like an outsider trying to position herself and the program for personal gain. She submits to the University tenure committee for a tenure review but doesn't submit a full packet in part because she just got promoted to full professor at Concordia so felt the Concordia stuff should be good enough (?!) and because she was being 'fast tracked' so was told some documentation would not be necessary. Turns out she doesn't get tenure (not a single favorable vote from a commitee of 7, but I'm not supposed to know that). Her tenure vote was 2 weeks ago.

Terry has taken the tenure vote as indication UWM is not committed to the development of PT on campus and that UWM doesn't really respect or understand applied professions like PT. Truth is, Terry's only publications are good ones but exclusively in the PT journal. What the committee wanted to see was a little diversity- some publications in PT and some publications in basic science journals. Terry doesn't collaborate with anyone - so it is hard for her to publish there.

So, Terry now stands with time healing some of the wounds inflicted at Concordia and with UWM not giving her everything she wants. UWM has a contract offer out to her at the rank of assistant professor with a short (2 year) tenure clock. Terry thinks that if she can't get hired at UWM then no one will be successful in getting the program running (if they reject her they will reject everyone). Terry is now working to get the Dean's position at Concordia and then asking me to come back to Concordia to be the PT program director there. I have very bluntly said that will never happen - but I think my message is falling on deaf ears. Concurrently, she is waiting to see if UWM will appeal the tenure decision on her behalf as indication they are truly committed to and invested in having PT on campus.

The truth is UWM is regretting they have an offer on the table and likely will not move forward with a tenure appeal. An appeal might be granted since she did not have some information required in a full packet so there is a procedural basis for appeal. My guess is an appeal would need to come from Terry and I don't know what she will do. Terry keeps saying everything is out of her hands and she plans to do nothing but sit tight and wait this out. While she waits though - her perspective of this story gets out locally and creates an image issue for UWMs program - for which I am the name and face.

I've been tentatively offered the director position I originally applied for - but until the offer out to Terry is sorted out, nothing moves forward. I am not a very patient waiter - so this is a rough time.

Our faculty at Concordia was strong and our curriculum was exceptional. Terry wants that team back and I think her public dismissal of the UWM stuff is an attempt for me to see the logic in returning to Concordia. Even if I were interested (and I'm not - the opportunities are far too great at UWM, but even if I were...) my professional reputation would be destroyed if I left a job at UWM after such a short tenure and my word would never be trusted.

So, with that context, I had to room with Terry in San Diego for the conference this last week (M-F). We thankfully did not attend much of the same stuff but still had to find a way to live peacefully. Not a very relaxing trip...

I'll finish the story when I know the ending -- hopefully soon. Who needs TV soap operas when the real life ones are sooooo much better!
