The #1 thing you should consider is to gut that truck as much as you possibly can. The enemy of these old trucks is WEIGHT!! On the fast trucks I've seen that were quick had gutted pretty much everything possible that was double wall with a plasma cutter and a grinder to clean up the edges. They removed the back side of the front fenders, removed all the heater box stuff and put a plate over the hole. They gutted the doors and anything else they could take out of the cab. They took out the inner pannels of the box and braced the box sides with mild steel square tube. They also took out the floor of the box, installed aluminum square tube and put a sheet of sheet aluminum in place of the factory floor.. Clearly they took a lot of weight out and it really paid off. A good cage is important due to taking the rigidity of the cab for safty. Oh yea, they also drillved as many holes as they could to the core support for weight there too. If you can find them, fiberglass bumers will also save lots of weight... Put that thing on as much of a diet as you possibly can, you'll really see a huge difference in your power to weight ratio!!! If you do this, I would love to know how much weight you were able to take out of your 72.
Good luck!
