I think it was also a way of contrasting Gallimard's relationship with Song and the already suffering one he had with his wife. Maybe it was also a way of showing how Song was supposed to be the subordinate player in their game: she would never cheat on G, whereas he can control their relationship by cheating on her. From this point of view, the end realization that Song was really the one controlling the relationship becomes that much more dramatic.
