I was also a little confused as to why Hwang would put in the scene with Renee. I felt that it almost put his relationship with Song on a different level. With Renee he was having a sorded affair with a promiscuous woman, with Song he was in love with a person he felt to be his soulmate. I felt that Hwang put that in just so we could see the contrast. Also, it made Gallimard less desperate, it showed the reader that he could get other women if he so desired.
