450 Final Paper

The final paper will involve a critical awareness of your political role as an artist. This is very difficult. What is meant by artist in this case? This means an understanding that everyone has a potential role and responsibility in producing cultural work (in contrast to the elitist notion that only a talented few can be called "Artists" or in contrast to the capitalist view that only those who get paid for art can be called "Artists").

The paper would propose you ideas related to one or two texts of the course and one of your own creative works. As a result, your paper cannot be written as a long rant or confessional on your own opinions without any context. The syllabus indicates when paper proposals are due. It is suggested that you start early and bounce your ideas off the TAs and your fellow writers on the website. The papers are not graded on a curve - do not be shy about sharing your idea for fear that someone might "steal" it. All scenes, papers, ideas are evaluated on an individual basis.

Examples of what might be final papers are below :

Paper title:
"What's Sex Got to Do With It?: Woman as Nation"
-- a paper that examines my ideas regarding sexuality and foreign conquest
-- focus on M Butterfly, Dien Cai Dau, and one of my scenes
-- attention paid to proposing but also self-critiquing my very own ideas and interpretations

Paper title:
"Investigating Class and Capital in Oleanna, Spinning Into Butter, and [one of my poems]"
-- a paper that examines my ideas regarding social class, capital, and its relation to institutions
-- focus on the works named
-- attention paid to proposing but also self-critiquing my very own ideas and interpretations

Paper title:
"Who Gets to Speak?: Contests of Authenticity and Representation in Spinning into Butter, The Literary Review, and [one of my scenes]"
-- a paper that examines my ideas regarding the tricky and explosive politics of representation
--focus on the works named
--attention paid to proposing but also self-critiquing my very own ideas and interpretations

Paper title:
"Bondage and Prison as Metaphors: Subverting Power Behind the Mask"
-- a paper that examines my ideas regarding bondage and prison as potentially liberating while oppressive
--focus on Bondage, M Butterfly, and [one of my poems]
--attention paid to proposing but also self-critiquing my very own ideas and interpretations
