For my final paper I plan on examing the way sex poetry raises serious social and polical issues. Sometimes these issues are readily apparent, as in Komanyaka's "Recreating the scene". In this poem the ideas of conquest, male domination, female subjugation/ repression are brought to the surface as the poet captures the scene of a gang rape. Another example would be Tim Seibles "Bonobo" in which he raises the issue of censorship, labels, social norms and the implication of sexual repression.
Other times these issues lie below the surface of what seems to be the onyl way the poem can be read. Such is the case with some of my own poems in which the narrator uses her sexual and romantic expereinces to speak about her disillusionment with herself adn the world at large.
My paper will explore the literary devices the authors use to raise these issues( such as content, language, setting, structure, and first or third person narrative).
In the end, I will evaluate how effective sex poetry is at raisign these issues. Whether it can be read on different levels, or if it is a genre that is inherently doomed and destined to be labeled as one dimensional.
