Art is personal and as a result political as well. When a writer writes a play, poem or novel, personal experiences and opinions are embedded in the piece and it becomes personal. They offer different viewpoints on subjects. The same is applicable to artists who paint, draw and dance to express personal views of society and other social issues. A wonderful collection of poetry I would like to recommend in regards to political literature is Against Forgetting. It includes poetry from different war periods(from the Armenian Genocide to the present). I'm not suprised that the performance of Miss Saigon enticed the riots described in the article because the play did romanticize a time period that was filled with rapes and sexual abuse. However, it is important to remember that it is a play and not reality...the play does not claim that these are the experiences that all women encountered during the war period. I think this play and M Butterfly are wonderful pieces of literature because they entice people to express their viewpoints on social matters and to get into discussion, especially in our classroom. Gilman says the same in her interview. She gets excited when she prompts the audience to think about things without forcing them. It happens naturally through her writing.
